Sonic Generations hitting PS3 and 360 on Nov. 1

While every game ever battles it out for a lucrative spot in yet another financially ruinous November, Sonic Generations grabs the first available date for its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Sega's brisk, blast-processed stroll down memory lane will launch on November 1 in North America, and November 4 in Europe (where you can also obtain an elaborate special edition).

Sega has only confirmed the launch dates for Sonic's console outings at this time. The 3DS version, which features platform-exclusive levels and a two-player versus mode, is scheduled for "late 2011."

Xbox Live coming to Windows 8

As part of Microsoft's continuing effort to provide its users one all-encompassing ecosystem for all of their entertainment needs (or something), the company has announced that its latest operating system, Windows 8, will support Xbox Live. Exact details on integration are forthcoming, but the biggest question that surfaces in our is: What does this mean for Games for Windows Live?

We've got some questions in to Microsoft and will update as soon as we can. [Update: A Microsoft spokesperson tells us "we currently have nothing to announce beyond the statement that Major Nelson posted on his blog."] In the meanwhile, how about some tentative rejoicing?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Gears of War 3: Epic Edition, epic unboxing gallery

Well, here it is, people. The "Epic Edition" of next week's Gears of War 3. It's a big box, packed full of some big treats. Are you the kind of gamer who wants to declare his affection for the franchise by displaying an 11" statue of Marcus Fenix in your home and/or workplace? NOICE! Scratch one consumer. Maybe you're more intellectual? How does a 96-page book titled "The Art and Design of Gears of War" penned by Extra Lives scribe (and patron saint of video game writers) Tom Bissel sound?

Oh, we get it ... you want the "exclusive unlockable Adam Fenix multiplayer character" so you can play as Marcus' elderly father and use the "I've fallen and I can't get up" line. Yeah, we're bringing back that old chestnut.

Here's how you set up your PlayStation Vita

Wondering how you'll set up your PlayStation Vita come ... whenever it launches in the US? Well, it turns out that we've got this handy presentation straight from Sony's TGS 2011 presser earlier today, courtesy of our cohorts at Engadget. You'll get an idea of how to peel back a virtual page and, um, describe yourself. For instance, how old are you? Do you even know? You look so young!

Two new PlayStation 3 bundles (in blue and red) headed to Japan

Sony hasn't stopped trying to pique your interest in importing a flashy, Japan-exclusive PlayStation 3, announcing "Scarlet Red" and "Splash Blue" PS3s today during its Tokyo Game Show 2011 presser.

Hitting stores on November 17, the freshly colored PS3s will pack 320GB HDDs and an asking price of ¥29980 ($389.85) They might not have fancy embellishments from popular RPGs, but they sure are purty.

Dead or Alive 5 in development, heading to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012

There's a brand new Dead or Alive game in development, and it's heading to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi offered "a glimpse in the future" of the DOA franchise during tonight's TGS 2011 Tecmo event, during which he asked that we shut off all recording equipment (thus the lack of a thrilling image above). In a teaser trailer of a pre-Alpha (read: very early) build of Dead or Alive 5, Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa faces off against rival Hayate on top of a brightly lit urban area -- perhaps the Shibuya digs we're currently writing this from? Hayashi teased dramatic new levels, and even went as far as to call the game "fighting entertainment," rather than "just a fighting game." (Note: It's a fighting game.) We've added the first teaser trailer above and a ... tantalizing image just after the break. Keep it cool, big guy!

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded gets special Move bundle for PS3

If you didn't buy all the PlayStation Move hardware yesterday thanks to GameStop's 50% off sale, you might be interested in Activision's special Move-only GoldenEye 007: Reloaded bundle, called the "Double 'O' Edition."

The first 'O' is surely the game, which has unsurprisingly remapped the original Wii controls to the Move. That means the second 'O' must be referring to the bundled hardware, which includes a Move motion controller, the navigation controller, a PlayStation Eye camera, and the SharpShooter peripheral. But there's also a PS3-exclusive downloadable character, Moonraker's Hugo Drax ... is that a third 'O'?

There's no word on price, but we're going to guess it matches Resistance 3's very similar Doomsday bundle at $150. Depending on your income, that could certainly elicit yet another 'O.'

You can find any other missing 'O's on November 1, when both the regular edition and the Double 'O' Edition shake up your local supervillain's subterranean shopping fortress.

Nyko Zoom for Kinect available now

The Nyko Zoom is a lens attachment for the Xbox 360 Kinect that simply, snugly connects over the front of the device. The $30 peripheral, which is available now, makes it so that players can stand about 40 percent closer to the Kinect. In other words, it allowed those with cramped, furnished living spaces, like most of the Joystiq team, to get their Kinect on.

If you don't need the Zoom for space-saving purposes, don't bother getting it. It won't help if you've already got ample area. It basically works by squishing and widening the playing field so, where a single-player game used to work optimally at about seven feet (nine feet for two players), it now functions well at four feet (six feet for two players). The playing field now ends at around eight feet with the Zoom, instead of ten feet without.

Games we tested (Dance Central, Your Shape and Kinect Adventures) worked as intended with the lens on. An awkward side-effect of the lens is that it does create what appears like dead space around the perimeter of your feedback screen (viewable on the dashboard and in some games), but if your body moves into those spaces it will still be recognized. The Zoom also creates slight distortions in the player's silhouette; again, the system still recognizes bodies and creates the correct vector skeleton of the player, it's more an issue of just noticing that it "doesn't look right," instead of it actually affecting games.

If you live in cramped quarters and the Nyko Zoom will let you properly play Kinect (or just avoid moving the furniture around to do so), the attachment is worth the investment.

Although the lens did work for us with the games we tested, we are receiving and reading feedback that is making us uncomfortable about recommending this product. At this time, we will simply say that the Nyko Zoom is available and results vary.

TGS 2011: PS3 At 51.8 Million, PSP Hits 71.4 Million

Sony's press conference at this year's Tokyo Game Show is taking place right now, and as usual, they've started with some statistics.

Will You Carry Around A Phone And A PlayStation Vita?

With everything becoming integrated these days, some analysts are wondering if the mobile gaming explosion will hurt Sony's new handheld device.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Move Pack review: A brand new toy box

The LittleBigPlanet 2 Move Pack DLC (which is suitably, adorably subtitled Rise of the Cakeling) is the franchise's most gargantuan expansion, and could make a run for the most ambitious DLC release for any game ever released. Just as the core game sought to allow the use of a DualShock 3 for virtually any purpose, this expansion hopes to give players the same freedom with the PlayStation Move.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 dated worldwide, bundled with limited edition system in Japan

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will arrive in America on January 31, Square Enix announced today at Tokyo Game Show. Europe's version will follow on February 2. Japan's release is set for December 15, with an extra option (above).

The first Final Fantasy XIII was accompanied in Japan by the lovely white and pink Lightning Edition PS3. With another Final Fantasy XIII game comes another limited edition, Japan-exclusive system -- this time in "pearl black." There's still a lot of pink. The Lightning Edition Ver. 2 PS3 will include a 320GB hard drive, the game and a controller when it ships in Japan, at a price of ¥37,960 ($495).

Razer building Xbox 360 arcade stick, with help from people who know arcade sticks

Razer, which just expanded into the luxury laptop market, is also trying its hand at arcade sticks. During TGS, it announced what is likely its most Japan-focused product: an Xbox 360 stick being designed with input from pro fighting gamers and other "community" members.

The concept is actually a "closed beta," launching at TGS, in which modders and fighting game enthusiasts will be given sticks and asked to provide feedback and improvements. The prototype of the stick shows that Razer's already on the right track -- it's hinged, and can be opened up easily for modding. Check out the prototype in the gallery below while we to try to go mess with the hardware in person at TGS.

And if you're skeptical about Razer being able to pull off an arcade stick, think about how you felt the first time you heard that Mad Catz was doing it.

The hidden costs of PlayStation Vita: 3DS-esque battery life and mandatory memory cards

When Sony announced the price of the PlayStation Vita at E3 this year, there was an audible gasp followed by a round of vigorous applause. Sony's $250 asking price matched that of Nintendo's now admittedly overpriced 3DS ... but that was before Nintendo's aggressive price drop. It turns out you should also consider the cost of some unnecessary, but recommended, accessories.

A press release detailing much of Sony's initial Japanese PlayStation Vita offerings quantifies the portable's battery life: approximately "3~5 hours" for games, approximately "5 hours" for video, and approximately 9 hours for music "in stand-by mode." That's with Bluetooth turned off, headphones used instead of speakers, the "default setting" on screen brightness, and no "network" use in games, meaning ixnay on 3G or Wi-Fi. With some or all of those modifiers activated, it's anyone's guess how long the Vita will last.

Mortal Kombat sells 3 million units worldwide

Warner's successful Mortal Kombat reboot has officially sold 3 million units globally, making it the most successful fighting game of the year and the "most successful console game for the iconic franchise," according to the publisher.

"NetherRealm Studios delivered a high quality game which has exceeded our sales goals," said Martin Tremblay, President of WBIE. The impressive sales figures were also likely responsible for the game's second marketing push when the Freddy Krueger DLC launched, with those ads ending up all over demographically appropriate TV networks.

For a franchise that languished for years under defunct publisher Midway, it's amazing to see the turnaround WBIE helped facilitate in money and marketing following its Mortal Kombat acquisition.

MGS HD Collection coming to Japan on November 23

So much for a stealthy infiltration to retail: Konami has announced that the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is slated for a Japanese launch of November 23 (as reported by Japanese games blog Game Jouhou). Word came during Konami's stage show event during TGS 2011 today -- err, that may be tomorrow. We're still not sure how the whole time thing works over there.

Outside of launch window, Konami revealed the game would have a special feature allowing players to view select scenes in either traditional full frame (4:3) or in the now-norm widescreen mode (16:9). Additionally, the PS3 version will come with a download voucher for the original Metal Gear Solid on PSN. An Xbox 360 incentive is currently being decided.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is slated to launch in North America "this winter."

Metareview: Gears of War 3

The trilogy has concluded, and now that you've read what we had to say about Gears of War 3 it's time you checked in with the rest of the critical community. Were they as enamored of curb-stomping Locusts for a third time? Yes, pretty much.
  • Giant Bomb (100/100): "It answers questions. It leaves things in a dramatically different place than they were at the start of the game. If this were to be the final game in the Gears franchise, it'd be a satisfying place to leave things."
  • Game Informer (95/100): "Doesn't do anything radical, not that anyone expected it to. Only the staunchest Gears haters will find much fault here, though. This is the best execution yet of an idea that spawned one of the biggest modern franchises in all of gaming. What's not to love?"
  • IGN (90/100): "Every third-person, cover-based shooter from here on out will likely be compared to Gears 3, and it provides a fitting and poignant-- if sometimes cheesy -- closing chapter to the trilogy...The noted hitches, design decisions and 'been-there, done-that' feel of much of the content colors the overall experience, but it certainly didn't keep me from having one hell of a good time."
  • Eurogamer (80/100): "In its multiplayer, all you could have reasonably asked for; in its visuals, new heights reached, while cracks of old age are papered over; in its story, a fitting conclusion; and in its campaign, though short of the consistent brilliance of its predecessor, a mostly rousing and memorable spectacle.

Gears of War 3 will have 21 weapon skins for purchase on day one

You'll be able to customize your guns for a little cash, either ala carte or in special packs, on launch day in Gears of War 3. Epic has confirmed with MTV Multiplayer that 21 different skins will be available, including floral prints, rainbows and several animated motifs.

Pricing for these weapons hasn't been revealed yet (at the moment they're listed as -1 MS Point each, which we expect to change because that's ridiculous). Producer Rod Fergusson promises to spill the beans on Friday at 5:30pm PDT during a live stream event on Twitch TV.

Report: August XBLA sales favor Fruit Ninja, Toy Soldiers

Specific Xbox Live Arcade sales data remains elusive, so we turn to Gamasutra's analysis of leaderboard information to gain a rough idea of how August's new games performed. Diminutive soldiers proved to be the most popular icons, followed by the ingenious pearing of Kinect and ninjas.

Tower defense and shooter mash-up Toy Soldiers: Cold War appears to have sold 160,734 units by August's end, earning 115,448 players during its first week at the conclusion of Microsoft's Summer of Arcade promotion. Gamasutra notes that this rate is actually slower than the original game's launch, which was paired with last year's "Block Party" lineup.

Fruit Ninja Kinect had 148,507 players for the month -- impressive in the context of Kinect-only downloadable games. And while it might not be as financially lucrative, the game's sure to expand its total player base in September while it's offered as a free bonus to owners of The Gunstringer.

From Dust and Bastion continued to do well in August, while Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet registered 48,389 players by the end of the month. Microsoft announced a DLC add-on called "Shadow Hunters" earlier this month, but it appears to have missed its (tentative) release date.

Infamous 2 and Festival of Blood getting Move support

Sony announced its holiday lineup of PlayStation Move games, anchored by ... two games that are already out! In addition to the Move Pack add-on for LittleBigPlanet 2, Sony revealed that Move support will be added to both Infamous 2 and Infamous 2: Festival of Blood. The $14.99 Festival of Blood will include built-in support for the glowy controller, and will also include the update for Infamous 2 when it launches on October 25.

After the break, find release dates for other Move titles coming this quarter, including Medieval Moves, Carnival Island, and EyePet and Friends. Actually, make that "release date," singular -- Sony's putting them all out on November 15
