Sony's HMZ-T1 head-mounted 3D display available in Japan on Nov. 11
Geordi LaForge ain't got nothin' on all them fly mothers in Japan -- once they start rockin' the HMZ-T1 3D display come November 11. The head-mounted duckbill features two 1280x720, 0.7-inch OLED screens that are meant to reproduce the sensation of watching a 750-inch screen in 3D from 20 meters away (ideal gaming conditions!) Oh yeah, and it's got 5.1 surround sound in the headphones.
Price? Can you really put a price on having the 24th century right now?
Okay, yes, because Sony is expected to charge ¥60,000 ($783 US) for the experience. The helmet, which must remain tethered, comes with an HDMI input and output processor unit. No word yet on when Sony will bring the future overseas.

Yakuza 5 and second PSP Yakuza in development at Studio Yakuza (also: Yakuza!)
You may think of Yakuza games as the exclusive purview of Dan, the guy in the polyester dragon shirt who's always at the comic store, even though he doesn't work there. But over in Japan, the series is a big business. "Just how big?",you ask, as you pretend to read an Archie to avoid making eye contact with Dan.
Famitsu reports (as translated by Andriasang) that the team developing Binary Domain (headed by Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi) has christened itself Studio Yakuza. Though it clearly won't dabble in the franchise exclusively, its next two titles are Yakuza Black Panther 2 -- due in spring 2012 for the PSP -- and, unsurprisingly, Yakuza 5.
We think we can all agree: The day belongs to Dan.

The Witcher 2 approaching a million sales
The Witcher 2 version 2.0 update for PC should arrive on September 29, alleviating the game's punishing opening and making other tweaks that should open up Geralt's excellent adventure to more players. The Xbox 360 version, which will ship with the V2.0 content, is still planned for Q1 2012.
Medieval Moves preview: Sporty skeleton
One of my biggest surprises during PAX Prime 2011 was a game I almost decided not to play.
Time is limited at these events, so when I was presented with a swath of choices at Sony's corner of the show at the nearby Grand Hyatt, I had to be shrewd. Starhawk? Sure! Journey! You bet. Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest? Ehh ...
Boy, am I glad I took a chance on this one, because slashing, guarding and shooting as the diminutive skeleton was some of the most fun I had all weekend.

Batman: Arkham City supports Games for Windows Live
For Batman, capturing criminals and maintaining safe, clean streets in Gotham is its own reward. For those of us lacking giant inheritances and cavernous basements, the incentive to do good just for the sake of being good isn't really enough. We need something we can hold; something we can point to and say, "I did that, here's my proof."
Achievements! It was just our roundabout way of saying Batman: Arkham City will support Games for Windows Live on PC, according to a Warner Bros. rep speaking to VG 247 today. We assume, just like its predecessor, the game will also be sold through Steam, though there has yet to be a games page created for it. We've contacted Warner Bros. for clarification. Achievements and DRM for Arkham City will be handled by Microsoft's platform.

Hideki Kamiya hints at Bayonetta 2 reveal
Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya has hinted that a sequel to Platinum Games' acclaimed sultry actioner may be announced later this week.
A translation by Andriasang has Kamiya Tweeting “This week…in a game magazine…” in response to a fan asking we could expect an announcement on a follow-up.
Whether he was joking or not remains to be seen, but then again the Tokyo Game Show is just around the corner so there’s still the possibility of a pre-show announcement.
Developer Platinum Games has hinted at Bayonetta 2 on numerous occasions in the past. Last October, studio co- founder Atsushi Inaba said the company would ‘love to make a sequel’ when the time is right. Meanwhile last September, Kamiya, responding to whether or not we’d see more from the series, simply replied, “I believe so.”
The original Bayonetta hit PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in January 2010. We came away rather impressed to say the least, despite some annoying bugs present in the PS3 conversion.

Expect To Hear About RDR2 After GTAV Is Announced
We can't be far away from an official Grand Theft Auto V unveiling. We just can't be.
And when that happens, we should probably anticipate some early news of a Red Dead Redemption follow-up. We have to forget that Rockstar has a couple blockbuster franchises now; RDR sold a truckload of copies and the critics loved it. There's little doubt that we'll see another installment and the studio must love the idea of two GTAs.
I still can't wait for GTAV, but RDR had a huge impact on me, and I'm not alone. I hate Westerns - always have - but for some reason, I just loved John Marsten's character and the atmosphere was fantastic. Publisher Take-Two loved the money the game generated and you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't like the Wild West epic. Yeah, GTAV is a top priority right now.
But don't think a RDR sequel or prequel is far behind. You won't be seeing official unveilings of RDR2 (or whatever they call it) the day after GTAV floods the Internet, but hey, GTAV can't be too far away...can it?

EA: We Can Still Get Plenty Out Of The PS3 And 360
See? Big publishers don't really want to deal with a new console cycle soon, either.
EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau told CVG that gamers are happy with the current generation, and he questions what a new round of machines would even be able to do.
Gibeau cited EA's own Battlefield 3 to prove that both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have plenty of juice left. And really, what might the PS4 be able to accomplish? Said Gibeau:
"It's hard for me to conceive what you would do on a PlayStation 4. The displays are already 1080p, you're already connected to the internet... You could make it faster, you could have more polys and you could up the graphics a little bit... but at what cost?
It'll be interesting to see how [Sony and Microsoft] think about it in terms of the next generation but it seems to me that customers are happy, and we're happy to build games on [360 and PS3] right now."
Gibeau went on to say that the industry has changed, and "big console transitions" just won't happen anymore. He says the lifespans of machines are much longer now, and the digital age is changing how consumers get their entertainment. But currently, the bottom line is that we can still get a lot of mileage out of the PS3 and 360. Finished Gibeau:
"One of the things that we like is that the technology is consistent, and we believe that there are still things that you can do on these systems... we haven't quite squeezed the last once of hardware horsepower out of these things, as you can see with Battlefield 3."
Like many gamers, this guy wants to "see the cycle last a little longer." And he doesn't believe consumers are "banging on the walls for a new platform." Based on what we've seen at PSXE, we'd have to say his observation is accurate.

Uncharted 3 Collector's Edition Detailed
It's the official unboxing of the Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Collector's Edition, which will release in North America on November 1 for $99.99. As you might expect, this bad boy is packed with all sorts of awesome goodies.
It comes in a "very cool looking reproduction of a traveling chest" that boasts exclusive exterior artwork. Inside? Full-size, wearable replicas of Nathan Drake's belt buckle and his necklace with Sir Francis Drake's ring, a Steelbook case for the game (the first ever for SCEA), and a high-quality statue of Nathan Drake, courtesy of Sideshow Collectibles, which is only available in this edition. It's always nice to get extra content on a game disc or something, but this is the type of material goodness that we really appreciate.
Oh, and did we forget to mention that quite possibly the best game of 2011 will also be included? Heck, that alone might be worth a hundred bucks. And no, that's not really a joke...

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary supports 3D TVs
Demonstrated to us at the recent Gamescom event in Germany, Halo's 3D intensity is scalable and only works in the game's updated graphics mode. Producer Dan Ayoub claims the framerate will stay "consistent" with 3D activated, even when things get hectic.
The 3D experience will not be available in splitscreen co-op, nor when shifting over to Halo's original graphics engine. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will be available on November 15.
Razer unveils $2800 'Blade' laptop
How long was Razer waiting to use that product name? Today, with its "PC Gaming Is Not Dead" countdown elapsed, the company unveiled its "Blade" laptop, billed as "the world's first true gaming laptop." What must Alienware think about that?
The "Blade" uses the UI from Razer's "Switchblade" concept -- a set of ten adaptive keys and an LCD touchscreen built into the keyboard, which can be used either as a touchpad or to display in-game information.
What it doesn't use from the Switchblade is the compact form factor. This laptop has a 17" LED-lit screen and weighs around 7 pounds. That's light for a gaming laptop, but heavy for a thing you're carrying around. It packs a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M with 2GB of video memory.
All those big numbers bring another one: the Blade will retail for $2799.99 when it launches in North America in Q4 of this year.
Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 3 still alive, Zeboyd at the helm
After its abrupt cancellation last year, Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 3 has risen from the ashes with developer Zeboyd Games taking control of the project. The studio is best known for its Xbox Live Indie Games and PC releases, Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death 7.
RPGamer reports that, given the retro nature of Zeboyd's titles, Penny Arcade Episode 3 will take on a similar graphical style (think: the 16-bit Final Fantasy games); Alex Mauer will be providing the soundtrack. This marks the first game in the series not developed by Hothead, which left the project last year and went on to develop DeathSpank.
Episode 3 is set to be released in 2012 on "as many systems" as possible. More information will be revealed at PAX East next year ... but that won't stop us from harassing Gabe and Tycho for information all weekend.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to have cross-play for PS3, PC, Mac and not Xbox
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will officially feature cross-platform play between the PS3, PC and Mac, Kotaku reports. To make the battlefield fair, PS3 players will be able to play with a keyboard and mouse; to make the battlefield completely favor PC/Mac users, PS3 players will also have the option of using a Move motion controller. Xbox 360 players will be able to play with a 360 controller, and maybe a live cat if they can figure out how to plug it in correctly (Protip: tail first.)
Valve bossman Gabe Newell has said he'd like to implement Steamworks on Xbox 360, but Microsoft has repeatedly resisted, instead placing restrictions on Xbox Live functionality. Global Offensive is Valve's second title after Portal 2 to use Steamworks on the PS3, and no one has burned down the Sony servers yet. Well, mostly.

Spider-Man Edge of Time preview: Edge of glory
Like a vagabond Lothario who flees from a relationship the moment it turns serious, Spider-Man always seems to leave developers just short of something really special. Neversoft never quite cracked "the perfect Spider-Man" while it had the license, and Shaba Games came within inches of it before it was shuttered.
Now, with Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Beenox is taking its second pass at the Web Head, and if the quality I saw at my PAX demo was any indication, it may be time to start getting nervous when Spidey "just runs out to buy some smokes real quick."

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive preview: Ready, set
You want pressure?
Take Counter Strike, a game that people are still fervently playing some 35 years after its original release, a game with a community so devoted that some won't migrate to patched versions of the same game.
Then, make an expanded and updated version and debut it to a gang of rabid, hardcore professional gamers. Oh, and tell them it's coming to consoles in addition to PC. Welcome to the recent lives of Valve's Ido Magal and Chet Faliszek and their latest project: Counter Strike: Global-Offensive.

Team Ninja will consider Vita game following Ninja Gaiden 3
A Ninja Gaiden game for PlayStation Vita remains an immaterial idea while Team Ninja gets Ninja Gaiden 3 ready for its 2012 launch. The developer has received a PlayStation Vita system to test and eventually chop in half mid-air, in an incredibly expensive variant of Fruit Ninja, but hasn't progressed beyond the consideration phase.
"We've received a PlayStation Vita system and are thinking about it," said team lead Yosuke Hayashi in a recent PlayStation Q&A. "Having said that, right now we're focused on Ninja Gaiden 3 for PS3, and after that's complete we'll start to look at ideas such as bringing out Ninja Gaiden on PS Vita because of course we'd like to expand the series."
Alright, let's toss in another concept tinged with "of course." Beyond the Wii U port (and planned 3DS game), Team Ninja will need some way to sell at least one more iteration of its latest Ninja Gaiden game. A Vita port mashed up with a Greek letter seems like a solid alpha bet.

Mass Effect art compiled in hardcover book from Dark Horse
Comic publisher Dark Horse has commissioned a new Mass Effect book that even James Vega can peruse without worrying over Drew Karpyshyn's reams of dense space prose. "The Art of the Mass Effect Universe" is a hardcover encapsulation of the entire franchise's visual work thus far, presented with (text) commentary from the folks at BioWare.
The $40 book's due in February 2012 and will contain art from Mass Effect 3, placing it in vague spoiler territory in front of the game's March debut. We can't say whether it will give you that long-awaited glimpse at Tali's face, but it'll definitely serve as a coffee-table tour of the opulent cities you've explored and the aliens you've engaged and/or punched. No word on iPad or Omni-tool versions yet.

Max Payne 3 screens come with a promise of more news
Rockstar sent out two new screens of Max Payne 3 today, featuring a stylized broken window and a stealthy hallway encounter. Two screens doesn't seem like much, but this is a game we've scarcely seen or heard from, so even a couple of screens seem like a rare treat.
We'll likely be seeing this media with a higher frequency now. Rockstar calls Max Payne 3 "our next big release on both consoles and PC" and promises " a lot of news in the next few months."
God of War: Origins Collection demo hits PSN tomorrow for Plus members, next week for everyone
The life of a Spartan is hard, you know? Not only do you spend the majority of your time battling the will of the gods and/or Freddy Krueger, but you've also got to deal with Ready at Dawn rebuilding your entire body from scratch. Being completely reconstituted from the ground up is a serious drag on a wrathful deity's love life, but it looks like the reconstruction process is nearly finished, as the God of War: Origins Collection demo will soon make its way into your living room.
PlayStation Plus members itchin' for some PSP-remake action can get their hands dirty as early as tomorrow, while plebeian un-Plus members will have to quell their bloodlust until September 6. Full stereoscopic 3D will be included in the demo as well, so if you've got a 3D-capable display and an action-capable attitude, the only thing keeping you from olympian glory is yourself. Unless you're not a PlayStation Plus member; that will also keep you from olympian glory, for one week.

Sony officially puts Resistance 3 back in PS3 3D Display bundle (if you pre-order)
All this time, we've thought Walmart, Amazon, and GameStop were stickin' it to the man by offering Resistance 3 as a pre-order bonus for Sony's 3D PlayStation Display, even after the bug-hunt simulator had been officially replaced by MotorStorm: Apocalypse. It seems we were wrong.
As it turns out, this was Sony's plan the whole time, for some completely inexplicable and incomprehensible reason. While still not officially part of the actual bundle, Resistance 3 will be included with any 3D PlayStation Display pre-ordered before September 30. MotorStorm: Apocalypse's inclusion is not dependent upon pre-ordering, however, so you've still got until the launch in November to decide if the features offered can justify $500.

Rumor: Modern Warfare 3 will host 32-player matches, new Bomb mode
SFX-360 spotted a YouTube video supposedly posted by someone who snuck into the Call of Duty XP setup on Los Angeles' west side and got a glance at some of the menus for the multiplayer mode. Most intriguing: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 might offer 32-player matches, which would be on a larger scale than the series has yet offered. 13 map names were also listed on the video, and in addition to the standard Team Deathmatch gameplay, there was also a mode simply called "Bomb." Its mechanics are yet unknown.
The good news is that we'll know for sure how legit this all is by Friday – that's when Call of Duty XP officially opens up to those who bought the $150 tickets for the show. Didn't get yours? Don't worry – they're still on sale right now. And even if you can't make it, we'll be there in attendance all weekend long to see what Activision has planned.

Commander Shepard is leaving us after Mass Effect 3
Unlike that other big space trilogy whose hero doggedly refuses to call it quits, Mass Effect's magnanimous (and/or tyrannical) Commander Shepard will be cashing in her Systems Alliance penchant and taking an early retirement after Mass Effect 3, according to BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka.
"After this, Commander Shepard's story is complete," Mazuka told PC Gamer, adding that they were "correct" in suggesting that Shepard absolutely will not be present in any future games set in the Mass Effect universe. No clue as to how Shepard will be exiting the series, naturally, but we figure our Mass Effect 3 play-through will end the same way our Mass Effect 2 one did: completely forgotten and overwritten by hours and hours of endless ore prospecting.
Modern Warfare 3 will employ Valve's Steamworks
It should come as a shock to no one, but Activision's announced Modern Warfare 3 will employ the tactical suite known as Steamworks. Developed by government contractor Valve in an underground bunker in Washington ... state, this secret technology will be the first line of support for soldiers in the field. It will help them connect with teammates and track down enemies far more efficiently. It will also let you mute Frank because what doesn't he get about this being a Silent Op?! We get it, Frank. Your cats do stuff.
As previously noted, dedicated servers are supported -- though we're not really sure how to fit that into our big military analogy here. Finally, gone are the days where you had to carry a Sharpie into the field to mark little dashes on your helmet for each bogey you downed. Now you've got achievements and stat-tracking, for quick and easy comparisons with your friends and the overall military at large. Remember: a good soldier is constantly trying to be a more gooder soldier than the other good soldiers around him. Or something.
